FAQ
Answers to the questions people ask most
General
What does FitHalo cost?
Nothing. FitHalo is free, with no subscription and nothing to unlock. No catch.
Are you sure I can't pay you anything for FitHalo?
FitHalo is given to everyone completely free, with no expectations. Your appreciation is all the thanks I need. If you'd like to do something, give it a good rating on the App Store. FitHalo never prompts you for a review in-app.
Is this AI slop?
Absolutely not. FitHalo has been years in the making, and its first versions were released in 2020, well before LLMs and vibe coding were even a thing.
Do I need a smartwatch?
No. You can record workouts on your phone, and FitHalo scores any workout your phone already has. A watch adds heart rate, step tracking, and widgets.
Is FitHalo coming to Android?
Yes. An Android version is on the way, targeting the first quarter of 2027, along with FitHalo for Wear OS watches.
Challenge and Scoring
Do workouts from other apps count?
Yes. Any workout saved to your phone's health data counts toward your FitHalo Score, whether it came from FitHalo, your watch's or phone's own workout apps, or another fitness app.
How is my FitHalo Score worked out?
Every workout earns points: 1 point per minute for duration workouts, like strength training, cycling, or yoga, and 10 points per mile for distance workouts, like walking, running, and hiking. A higher average heart rate boosts a workout's points by up to 50%, with the full boost at 80% of your maximum heart rate.
On top of that, the Daily Bonus adds 5 points for each day of the week you work out, up to 35, and the Variety Bonus adds 5 points for two different kinds of activity in a week, 10 for three, 20 for four, and 35 for five or more.
Your FitHalo Score is the total for the week. Pick a challenge tier as your weekly goal, from "Beginner" tier at 100 points to "Deity" tier at 1,000.
Strength Training
How does FitHalo choose the weight for my next set?
FitHalo projects your next weight and rep count based on your past performance of a given exercise. The Strength Progression article explains exactly how, with the research behind it.
Does FitHalo use established or branded programs?
No. FitHalo generates its own programs, built around the equipment you have available and the type of workout you choose. If you have a branded program you'd like in a format FitHalo can import, get in touch.
What if I lift more or less than FitHalo suggested?
That's expected. FitHalo learns from the weight, reps, and reps in reserve you actually log, not from its suggestion. If you do more, your next suggestion is heavier. If you do less, it's lighter. So always log what you actually lifted and how much you had left in you, not just what FitHalo suggested.
What happens after time away from an exercise?
FitHalo keeps expecting a little improvement for up to 10 days after your last workout with an exercise, or up to three weeks if other exercises trained the same muscles. After three weeks it stops, and if those muscles went untrained it lowers your estimate by 1% for each week after the second, up to 20%. If your first workout back goes better than suggested, the estimate goes straight back up. The Strength Progression article goes into even more detail.
Can I train for something other than traditional strength?
Yes. FitHalo can generate routines for Functional Strength, Cross Training, HIIT, Pilates and Core as well as traditional strength, and any exercise can be worked for time instead of reps. Weight suggestions apply to Traditional Strength routines.
Does FitHalo work with Hevy?
Yes. With a Hevy Pro API key, FitHalo can bring your Hevy routines and workouts in, and send the sessions you log in FitHalo back to Hevy. Each direction is its own setting. The privacy policy describes what is shared.
Workouts and Equipment
How does FitHalo estimate calories for rucking, sauna and cold plunge?
Each workout type has its own model, built from published research and checked against the measurements in those studies. The calories article walks through every formula and its sources.
Will rucking or weighted vest workouts lower my cardio fitness estimate?
No. FitHalo records rucks and weighted vest workouts in a way that keeps them out of cardio fitness estimates, so carrying extra weight doesn't make your fitness look worse.
What equipment can I connect?
Treadmills, walking pads, indoor bikes, rowers, ellipticals, stair climbers, and step climbers that support the Bluetooth Fitness Machine Service (FTMS), plus cycling power meters and running speed and cadence sensors. Chest straps and other standard heart rate monitors work too, paired through your phone or watch.
Privacy
Does FitHalo collect my data?
No. Your health and workout information stays on your devices. Data leaves your device only when you connect a service such as Strava or Hevy, or share your progress with friends. The privacy policy has the details.
